The streets fanning out from Morningside Park through 90305 still carry a lot of the same chain-link that went up when these blocks were first built in the 1950s. That original hardware is failing — posts rusting off at grade, rails bending under Santa Ana wind events that push through the Inglewood corridor at 50-plus mph. Vinyl holds up to those gusts if the posts are set right: 28-30 inches deep in fast-set concrete, steel reinforcement channels inside, gravel base at the bottom. Inglewood's residential blocks break into three distinct situations, each with its own fence history and its own set of problems. In the Lockhaven and Fairview Heights neighborhoods — roughly the parcels west of Crenshaw Boulevard between Florence Avenue and Century Boulevard in 90302 and 90303 — the housing stock is almost entirely 1940s and 1950s bungalows on tight 50x120-foot lots. Most of those single-family properties still have the original wood or chain-link from the first build. Wooden posts are rotted at the base, chain-link is pulling away from corner posts, and nobody has re-tensioned the runs in decades. Closer to the Hollywood Park development and the new mixed-use blocks around Arbor Vitae Street and Prairie Avenue in 90301, HOA covenants now specify fence height limits, color palettes, and require design submittals before installation starts. The third situation is the 90304 and 90305 zone south of Century Boulevard toward the LAX approach corridor — denser multi-family and apartment parcels, shared-boundary fence situations where both neighbors often need to agree before anything gets pulled. Edward Vincent Jr. Park sits in the middle of this zone; blocks within a few streets of the park tend to have newer city tree canopies that create root pressure on fence lines — something we check during the on-site walk. All of Inglewood sits on silty clay subsoil that expands seasonally. Post footings under 24 inches will shift. That's not an opinion — it's what we see every time we pull an old post and find two inches of concrete sitting on wet clay. Building code allows 24 inches in some jurisdictions; Inglewood's soil drainage conditions mean 28-30 inches is the real minimum, and permit submissions for pool barriers require documentation of footing depth. Clay subsoil here means setback and depth are both non-negotiable.
